History

The CAS Conference has been organized in Romania yearly since 1978. The initial name was the Annual Semiconductor Conference (acronym CAS) and the first editions were organized by ICCE (Institute of Research for Electronic Components).
Starting with 1991, CAS was opened to the international scientific community and changed its name accordingly to  the International Semiconductor Conference, still maintaining the same acronym (CAS).
The conference became an IEEE event in 1995, being sponsored by the IEEE EDS (Electron Devices Society).
Since 1997, the Conference was organized by the National Institute for R&D in Microtechnology (IMT Bucharest), as this institute resulted from merging of IMT (Institute of Microtechnology) with ICCE. Consequently, the conference profile has been gradually extended from semiconductor devices physics and technology (including semiconductor materials and microelectronics) to micro- nanotechnologies.
In the last two decades, the conference was frequently accompanied by satellite events, such workshops organized by FP6 and FP7 European Projects such as: WAPITI (STREP), PATENT (NoE), 4M (NoE), AMICOM (NoE), INTEGRAplus (IP), MEMS-4-MMIC (STREP), SMARTPOWER (IP), MIMOMEMS (CSA), SOI-HITS (IP), NANOCOM (ENIAC), or thematic workshops: “New trends in automotive electronics” (organized by Infineon Technology Romania) or “IEEE EDS Mini-Colloquium NADE – Nanoelectronic Devices – Present and Perspectives” (organized by IEEE EDS Romania Chapter). In 2016, a tutorial for students was organized by Honeywell Romania.
