Present position: 1998 - present: researcher, National Institute for Research and Development in Microtechnologies (IMT-Bucharest), Center of Nanotechnologies

Research interests:

The study of the materials with nanometric dimensions due to their attractive properties for integration in miniaturised devices.
I. The first nanostructured material investigated was porous silicon (PS):
(a) Investigation of the influence of electrochemical etching parameters and on its morphology, composition, and structure - during the Faculty I was involved in a project concerned to the theoretical study of trapping levels in fresh nanocrystalline porous silicon by Optical Charging Spectroscopy (OCS) methods and electric transport phenomena by I-V, I-T measurements.
(b) Due to the modification of PS properties in time, different physico-chemical methods were developed for surface modification according with subsequent applications: stabilisation for integration in an optoelectronic device at the beginning, and recently functionalisation for achieving of nanostructured materials biocompatibilities for interfaces with biological systems:
- the study of the photoluminescence properties of PS, their evolution in time and the modification induced by different additional treatments; development of stabilisation methods based on electrochemical processes, cyclic voltammetry, and thermal treatments.
- the developmend of different technologies obtain biocompatible silicon nanostructured layers and I studied the cell culture growth on the surface of the micro/mezo porous silicon. Microscopic and spectroscopic methods (SEM, fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy) were used for characterisation of the adherence processes and the interactions of live cells with biomaterial.
(c) The study of DNA infiltration in the Si pores and binding of the molecules by using of the ELISA technique after exposure of the derivatized PS surfaces in a solution of protein or DNA strand
(d) Fabrication and investigation of the bioresorbable mesoporous silicon like an implant for controlled drug delivery - the characterisation of the impregnation process of the “reservoir” with different microelements (metals) as: Fe, Mg, K, Ag, Au in a variety of preparation conditions; SEM, EDX, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) measurements.
