Power Grid Modernization towards a More Stable Future

Project duration:
March 2022- December 2023
Project budget: 600.062 Euro
Domain project: Energy

Abstract

The project activities are designed to demonstrate a new concept, at an international level, for improving the stability of grid, reducing the energy waste of renewable electricity, in line with the less carbon intensive energy strategies, and finally to achieve an effective energy management system. Currently, the lack of stability in the power grid is a problem present at a global level and has led to a growing number of power grid failures. Due to an increasing demand in delivered power, the need for improving the storage units becomes urgent. There is a pressing need to incorporate a replacement with a fast response to address the industry problems so that the future can be allowed to look a lot greener.

The SuPriM project represents a joint RDI effort - incorporating micro-nanotechnologies, advanced functional materials, energy management and smart grid applications - aiming at developing a reliable technology for the fabrication of cutting-edge supercapacitor devices (with superior power performance and high energy density) that meets the requirements of an efficient and integrable storage system for smart energy management.

The project will develop innovative design and key technologies for silicon based on chip supercapacitors (OcSCs) for power grid stability that can be easily scalable to pilot production. Moreover, services for future adequate design and technology for successfully integration of the renewable energy sources into the main power grids, solving the stability related issues would be provided. Consequently, it will also closely align the IMT research interest to NRRP Pillar I. Green transition provisions, namely Ensuring the green transition and digitalization of the energy sector by promoting renewable electricity generation, energy efficiency and future technologies.
