Dr. Eng. Alexandra Mocanu (alexandra.mocanu@imt.ro) is a 2nd Degree Scientific Researcher at the National Institute for Research and Development in Microtechnologies (IMT Bucharest) and an Associated Professor at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest. She received her PhD title in Chemical Engineering (2012, “Self-assembled colloidal polymer dispersions”) awarded with the “Excellent” qualification and followed a PhD stage at University of Patras, Greece in 2011.
Her work advances the fields of nanotechnology, materials science, and biomedical applications, with a particular focus on polymer photonic crystals, chemical recycling, carbon-based nanostructures and biomass valorization.
Her career is distinguished by leadership in competitive research projects and international scientific collaboration. She currently serves as Project Responsible for the national innovation project BIOCELLPLAST (2025–2027, https://scient.ro/antimicrobial-patches/) dealing with innovative wound dressings.
She was part of the Management Committee of CERTBOND project (2019–2023, COST Action CA18120, https://certbond.eu/) focused on structural adhesives and played key roles in major collaborative project MARIGREEN (2021–2024, H2020 BluBio, https://marigreen.chimie.upb.ro) dealing with biocarbon-based fertilizers for soil treatment. She has also acted as Project Director for the international mobility project PN-IV-P2-2.2-MC-2024-0377 (2024), conducted in collaboration with CNRS – Aix-Marseille University, focusing on advanced thin-film deposition techniques. Earlier, she led the research grant BIOPHOTOCARB (2017–2018) on biomass-derived carbon materials. Her sustained involvement in projects such as CREWPROTECT (2014–2016, https://www.mta.ro/ProiectSistemProtectie/index.html) for ballistic protection of military vehicles as project responsible and RECYRIG (2016–2018) for chemical recycling of plastic materials by microwave irradiation as key person further highlights her long-standing contribution to innovation and applied research.
Dr. Mocanu’s excellence has been recognized through prestigious distinctions, including the L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Award – Physical Sciences (2019) for her work on PHOTOSENS project focused on polymer photonic crystals for gas sensing applications. She received the Best Paper Award at the 48th International Semiconductor Conference CAS (2025) for her contribution to smart wound dressings based on bacterial cellulose, as well as the Ilie D. Bursuc Award for Best Invited Presentation at ICPAM-16 (2024). These honors reflect both the scientific impact and the applied relevance of her research.
An active presence in the global scientific community, Dr. Mocanu has been invited as a speaker and researcher at leading international institutions and conferences, including engagements in Japan, France, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, and Serbia.
Her scientific activity covers a broaden interdisciplinary experience between chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, physics, nanoscience, and nanotechnology totalizing over 100 publications from which 3 reviews, 1 book chapter (Nova Publishing Inc.), 1 patent, and 2 patent application forms.
