Emanuel Popovici(SM-IEEE)



Emanuel Popovici(SM-IEEE) is a Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork(UCC), Ireland, the University where George Boole once taught. Emanuel received a Dipl. Ing. degree in Computer Engineering from the University Politehnica Timisoara, Romania and a PhD in Microelectronics from University College Cork, Ireland (National Microelectronics Research Centre) respectively. For his work, Emanuel received the Qualcomm Faculty Award (2024), UCC Staff Recognition Impact Award (2024), UCC Research Supervisor Award (2023), UCC Teaching and Learning Award (2019).
His research interests include algorithms and architectures for AI at the edge, low-power embedded systems, and reliable and secure computing and communications. He collaborates with many disciplines, including: anatomy and neurosciences, medicine, physics, mathematics, finance, computer science, applied psychology, biology/ecology/Earth sciences, civil and energy engineering, music, business, architecture, etc. His group achieved more than 50 awards and distinctions, including the 2020 Reed and Mallick Medal for Urban Planning and Design from the Institution of Civil Engineers London, the 2018 Irish Labs Collaboration Achievement Award, and the 2016 Irish Engineering Lab of the Year Award. Emanuel has led three interdisciplinary teams to awards in the international IEEE/IBM Smarter Planet Challenge (2011-improved access to healthcare, 2012-smart interfaces for interacting with toys for children with disabilities, 2014-smart beehives), for which his group was commended by IEEE and IBM for projects that better humanity. His works on smart lighting solutions and bees are referenced in policy documents by the EU Parliament and the State of California, USA.
