Expertise Professor Ciurea has important contributions in the field of group IV Si-Ge-Sn and ferroelectric HfO2 nanomaterials and nanostructures with applications in optoelectronics, photonics and nanoelectronics, deposited by magnetron sputtering and nanostructured either ex situ by (rapid thermal, furnace) annealing and/or in situ during growth. Research focused on: ferroelectric orthorhombic phase HfO2 formation and stabilization by HfO2 capping and self-controlled Ge doping assisted by strain deformation; formation of group IV quantum dots embedded in dielectrics, with controlled size and adjustable density; preparation of CMOS compatible high-k oxide matrices and gate oxides; electrical, charge storage, ferroelectric and photoelectrical properties; nanoscale phenomena; size effects; group IV photonics; VIS-SWIR photodetectors and optical sensors; nonvolatile (photonic) memory devices; nanoscale strain in nanostructures and devices.
She established SiGeSn Group in NIMP and led it for more than 25 years. She has coordinated many research projects, most recent being PCE MultiGeSiNCmem/2020, PED FEROHAFOMEMO/ 2020, PCE NcSiGeSnOPELD/2017, PED MemoGenyAl/2017, M-ERA.NET PhotoNanoP/2016, and NIMP Responsible in PCCF GRAPHENEFERRO/2018. Received Success Story award for project M-ERA.NET PhotoNanoP in which GeSi NCs-based optical sensors (TRL5) discriminating between different slippery road conditions were developed.
Her research activity is reflected by more than 130 ISI scientific publications, 4 patents, 8 patent applications, 8 book chapters and >35 plenary and invited lectures at international conferences and prestigious EU & USA universities / institutes
